Aust feed company brings in tapioca, palm kernel for dairy cows
A bulk carrier ship has loaded 10,500 tonnes of tapioca in Thailand and another 16,400 tonnes of palm kernel in Indonesia to feed New Zealand dairy cows.
The newly-completed Nord Singapore will berth in Auckland on Saturday and is also due to discharge feed at New Plymouth and Lyttelton.
"Tapioca is a starch rich feed and can be used as a substitute for cereals in practically all livestock rations," said Michael Reeves, marketing manager for an Australian company, ABB Grain, in New Zealand. The drought - which is starting to break in many dairying regions - boosted sales of tapioca and palm kernel as dairy farmers bought supplements earlier to keep on milking.
Even though the rains had come, drought-affected pastures would need time to regenerate and farmers would continue to need supplements, he said in a statement.
Last year New Zealand imported more than 400,000 tonnes of palm kernel, the largest single imported feed for the national dairy herd. A decade ago, no palm kernel was imported. ABB Grain plans to build a $35.7 million feed mill in South Auckland, in a joint venture with Mainland Poultry,
"We've already begun work on constructing warehouses at Tauranga, New Plymouth to service the major dairy areas of Waikato/Bay of Plenty and Taranaki, with a further warehouse scheduled for Mount Maunganui," Mr Reeves said. The warehouses will also provide feed for poultry and pig farmers.
