Chicken feed price goes up

GOODMAN Fielder International Fiji Limited has increased the price of chicken feed by 10 per cent.
Members of the Small Holder Chicken Farmers Committee who breed and supply chicken to Goodman Fielder say the increase is not good for their survival.
Goodman Fielder said the increase would only affect contracted smallholder farmers.
"This type of feed is not for external sale," the company said yesterday.
"The global price of commodities increased in the past 12 months and the company can no longer sustain the costs.
"Ninety five per cent of the ingredients used in producing stock feed are imported and increasing costs resulted in the increase in price of feed."
Committee spokesman Vidya Prasad said the price of chicken feed rose by 20 per cent from last year, including this 10 per cent. He said, the increase in the price of fully-grown chicken rose by only 0.4 per cent last year and 3 per cent this year and the increase in price of chicken feed did not correspond with the increase in the sale price for chicken.
Mr Prasad said poultry farmers and Goodman Fielder met in Nausori yesterday.
